Tennis: 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony Uniforms
Follow @ShrewdTennis
All the Olympic qualification drama of a few weeks ago is now long forgotten with a sense of anticipation setting in to see the tennis players in action. Both on court (with doubles on this rare occasion becoming a focus) and at the Opening Ceremony.
Tennis players will be particularly prominent during the Olympic Games as one of the biggest mainstream sports to feature in The Games. Several players will also represent their countries as flag bearers during the Official Opening Ceremony. We review the uniforms that some of the national teams will be wearing during the ceremony and consider the tennis players’ appeal in their respective outfits.
PHOTOS OF PLAYERS FROM THE OPENING CEREMONY.
France
By: Adidas
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: Gilles Simon. The player bears a resemblance to Robert Pattinson. He will surely look exceedingly vampire-like in the white trousers and dark coat.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
USA
By: Ralph Lauren (They were however produced in China to the great despair of American politicians.)
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: Andy Roddick. He should look perfectly preppy in this almost All-American outfit. (You only have to overlook the berets and the whole Made in China debacle.)
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: John Isner. Hopefully he and the basketball team will get extra length pants.
Great Britain

Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: Colin Fleming. Tall, dark and mostly handsome.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: Andy Murray. In a suit. And a relatively skinny black tie.
Note: While reports prior to the Opening Ceremony indicated the Brits would wear the uniform pictured above, they in fact wore a white and gold tracksuit like uniform instead.
Italy
By: Georgio Armani
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: Fabio Fognini.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: No one. Everyone will look classy and superior to their competition in the dark colours.
China

Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: No one. Really, these are terrible.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: Li Na. I can see her telling jokes to the amusement of all the athletes around her.
Spain
By: Bosco Sport
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: Feliciano Lopez. He has to be one of very few athletes capable of making this getup look even remotely attractive.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform:Rafael Nadal. Essentially all their players – especially the male ones – are going to provide laughter in these suits, but Nadal has previously complained that he can barely ever find trousers large enough around the thighs to fit him. The poor man is going to make a picture while carrying the Spanish flag.
Note: Rumour has it the Spanish outfits have undergone slight variations to what is pictured due to complaints fielded.
Germany
By: Adidas
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: All the women. Sabine Lisicki, Julia Goerges, Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: Philipp Petzschner. White pants and light blue on the sulky German. Yes Please.
Australia
By: Sportscraft
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: Lleyton Hewitt. Rusty can definitely pull off white trousers and a blazer.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: Bernard Tomic.
Russia
By: Bosco Sport
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: Maria Sharapova.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: Maria Sharapova. By virtue of the Russian flag that she will be carrying.
(Thank you to reader Ana for pointing us towards the correct outfit.)
Serbia
By: Zekstra
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: Ana Ivanovic
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: Novak Djokovic
Switzerland
By: Undetermined.
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: No one.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: Everyone. Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka should look equally fish-out-of-water-like in the cargo pants.
By: Undetermined.
Player most likely to be best-dressed in their uniform: Roger Federer. We already know he looks good in a blazer.
Player that will provide the best entertainment value dressed in their uniform: Stanislas Wawrinka. Not guaranteed to be as big a hit.
(Thank you to reader, 10is for pointing us towards the correct Opening Ceremony uniform for the Swiss.)
South Korea
By: Fila
As there are no South Korean tennis players participating, I include this only to highlight the fact that Fila managed to produce both the attractively cut uniforms pictured above and the horrific colour combination in the outfit worn by Vera Zvonareva in the image below. (Thanks to @unseededandlooming for pointing it out.) Amazing that the same designers can have such a hit and a complete miss.
Due to popular demand and pressure by readers to include their country we have gathered a few more opening ceremony uniforms, including, Japan’s, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and a few others. This post was however becoming quite hefty so – take a look at PART 2.

Addition – As requested by South African readers – this is what Team RSA will be wearing during the Opening Ceremony.
